FENCES: An Immigration Study
FENCES: An Immigration Study
"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”
Overview: We are a nation of immigrants each with our own stories and family experiences. We are united in each of our own experience. For this project, we will explore the human face of immigration. Through interviews, literature circle readings, and field experiences, we will better understand the challenges and triumphs that all immigrant groups have faced. We will look at different perspectives on life in the United States from different immigrant groups. Students will learn about the history of various immigrant groups and explore how present day immigration influences our local community.
Essential Questions:
Why do people immigrate to the United States? What challenges have immigrants faced throughout history? What challenges do immigrants face today? How do immigrants negotiate between two cultural worlds? What is my own family’s immigration story? Can all Americans connect to one another even though we have all different backgrounds, traditions and cultures?
What you will be making:
· Reflection journal: This is a double-sided visual journal will consist of entries of your learning and “ah ha” moments. You will be writing your thoughts, ideas and questions about the different experiences, guest speakers, interviews, and activities throughout the project. You will then take one of your reflections and turn it into your Fences writing piece.
· Quest for a family name: You will be creating a graphic novel inspired by your family history. It could be a certain tradition, immigration story, or the story behind your family’s last name. You will need to research and interview a family member to learn of it.
· Moment of extraordinary learning (MOEL): This is an open ended product that reflects a moment when your perspective shifted, a new idea entered your mind, or a new learning was established. (this will be in conjunction with your Fences writing piece.
* Fences Project portfolio: This is a compilation of your work in class, homework and writings.
