The Faces of Cancer
The Faces of Cancer
1 out of every 2 people in America have been directly affected by cancer. Do you know someone who has been touched by this disease? Chances are you do. This is a multifaceted disease that can affect people regardless of ethnicity, gender, or age. There are many different types of cancer. Some are more dangerous than others; some are more preventative than others.
For this cross-curricular project we are going to look at all aspects of cancer. In Math/Science, we will explore the chemistry of living systems and scientific research. In Humanities, we will study the research process and humanitarian efforts to fight and prevent cancer.
What you will be learning:
Math/Science:
Important due dates/ benchmarks
Week 1 (Jan 23-Jan 27) : Introduction to the project; preliminary research sheet and research notes; learning the interview process.

What you will be learning:
Math/Science:
- Chemistry of living systems
- Body systems
- Cell function
- Treatment
- Online and library research
- Assessing the reliability of sources
- Writing a scientific research paper
- Persuasive advertising and marketing strategies (?- where does this come from?)
- Research Paper on Type of Cancer
- 3-6 pages using a variety of sources (e.g., Internet, books, magazines, and journals)
- You will have to include a chart or graph within
- You must use both print and online resources
- MLA format work cited
- Moment of Extraordinary Learning (MoEL)
- Part 1: Interview individual connected to cancer (e.g., doctor, nurse, patient, researcher)
- Part 2: Create a final product that reflects that moment and your learning (e.g., PSA, art piece, creative writing piece, photography project)
- Group Project for Exhibition- TBD
- Examples: documentary, awareness campaign, fundraiser, children’s book, podcast, or any other ideas your group comes up with.
